In _ At _ On

(American & British usage)

at = At refers to the fixed point that probably won’t change.

eg. at a bus stop/ school.

 

in = Something inside of something.

eg. in the box.

 

on = Something on the top of something.

eg. on the table.

All three are interchangeable.

 Examples:

I am in the bank.      (inside)

I am on the bank.     (on the roof of bank)

I am at the bank.      (instead of referring)

British say:           He lives in High street.

American say :     He lives on the High street.

British view- You are in a street because there are buildings on the both sides of you,so you are inside because there are walls.

American view- Because your feet are on the road that you are on the top of the street. The same applies for buildings, Americans see buildings as being on the top of the street.
